To start off the day we went to a street market in Porto Alegre. There was a wide selection of both food and handmade items. One of the most popular items was a stand that sold juice made out of sugar cane. Another popular stand was one run by an older woman that made jewelry out of “capim dourado” which translates into golden grass. It is a forever-living grass like species that are typically found in wet fields in the region of Jalapao. There was also an older man who makes cuyas which are cups made out of gourds. When we got there he had one for each of us with our name engraved into it.
Next we went to a market-mall hybrid that sold a lot of discounted products. A lot of us bought Gremio jerseys for the game that night. This was an interesting cultural experience since I have never been to anything like this before in the United States. After that we had dinner at a Mexican restaurant with the Brazilian students that we had worked with. It was a fun time and it was great being able to talk with the Brazilian students one last time.
Lastly it was time for the soccer game. The game was scheduled to start at nine and we got there right before kickoff. This game was something that many of us had been looking forward to for some time so we couldn’t wait for it to finally start. The stadium wasn’t very full since it wasn’t a very big game but the atmosphere was crazy regardless. There was a section close to us where the fans sang chants the entire game and didn’t sit down once. Overall it was a great experience that we will never forget.
