Our eighth day in Brazil didn't fail to stimulate us. Like always we had to remain flexible and alert. Last night's stomach flu really messed up our plans today and made us reschedule our visit to the research clinic until tomorrow. Today we found ourselves within a Mecca of consumerism. We drove ten minutes to the closest mall and exercised our inner capitalist by buying everything in sight. Shopping and eating within the gaucho food court brought some semblance to our previous lives as UNL undergrads. Brazilian malls are by design quite similar to American malls, but this visit allowed our group to go to bigger international stores like Zara and C&A.
We were graciously received in the home of Dr. Adriana Wagner of the psychology department of URGS for a discussion of Brazilian relationships and dating customs. Our visit was guided by Dr. Wagner and her PhD students as we shared stories and questions about our differences and similarities.
We ended the night by diving into an all you can eat pizza rodizio with flavors ranging from basil seasoned lamb to Nutella drizzled white chocolate! We were accompanied by faculty members of the music department at URGS and spent the evening discussing music, politics and our favorite Brazilian discoveries. The food was adventurous and the company was great. We still have a lot to learn but everyday presents new challenges and opportunity.
